Tesla – Master Plan 3 -The Goal. Tesla’s investor day laid out its direction and the key players that will help them get there.
Expectations
There was a lot of speculation about the investor day with lots of predictions and suggestions that this would be like any other presentation with a few hints about future products and a breakdown of how they got there.
Many predicted that the suggestion of the new cheaper Tesla would be the discussion point and a recap on the Cars, power, charging and manufacturing, but to say they underestimated the depth and breadth of what was presented is being conservative.
Master plan 1 and 2 were focused mainly on the vehicles creating a base to work from in the electric car industry to deliver the

The achievement of this and then the subsequent delivery of Giga Factories, battery cell production and a few other vehicles like the SEMI set the stage for the master plan 3 to be focused on the vehicle and manufacturing ramp.
However, Master plan 3 really delivered on the future of Tesla and how they are moving the world to sustainable energy and transportation.
The plan started out with a look at energy and how it will be possible to move from fossil fuels to renewables. This was laid out in a 5 Step process.
Repower the existing grid with renewables.
Switch to electric vehicles
Switch to heat pumps in homes, businesses, and Industry.
Electrify high temp heat delivery and Hydrogen.
Sustainable fuel planes and Boats
Now, most of this has been spoken about before but the one surprise was the discussion around Hydrogen. Elon has always said that hydrogen was not a great source of energy for small road vehicles. But in this instance when talking about large industrial machinery he did concede that hydrogen had a place.

They also discussed the minerals required for a sustainable future with Lithium and beyond to be mined. They also conceded that mining would continue just not as much as current coal mining.

One interesting fact was that due to the recent increase in interest, the volume of lithium that is being discovered is growing exponentially.
One of the key differences when talking about renewable minerals is their recyclability of them. Once a battery is depleted and targeted for recycling the minerals inside them can be repurposed back to the same purpose again and again.

The argument that Tesla is just a car company seems to be no longer narrative and continually moves Tesla towards a Technology company more and more.
It is truly exciting to hear and see the vision that Tesla is laying out to see.

Matchbox Car of the Future – Tesla, Matchbox cars have always been so much fun to play with as a child. They were always a great way to own a car without having to pay the price tag of some of the most incredible vehicles in the World.
Their simple designs and construction always made kids eyes light up with excitement and fun. Companies like Matchbox had thousands of cars both real and fantastic to choose from and they came in all shapes colours and types.
The construction of these vehicles would be as complicated as the real thing, but under the veneer, it was simply a metal cast with some plastic interior and wheels.
So why has it taken over 100 hundred years for a car company to try to do the same thing?
Tesla rethinks manufacturing
Matchbox Car of the Future – Tesla. Tesla has spent billions of dollars making some of the most incredible vehicles. They have now started to bring the same principles that matchbox employed into real-world vehicles. This simple approach has found several benefits.
Elon mentioned the process to create vehicles like matchbox cars several years ago. The Model Y seems to be the testbed for these advancements to make their way into real-world vehicles.
Giga Press
The Giga press appears to be the tool that will make this happen. The new factories of Giga berlin and Giga Texas and eventually Giga Shanghai will employ the use of the Giga press to produce castings of vehicle parts.
To achieve such an amazing manufacturing marvel Tesla worked to develop their own formula of aluminium to deliver the casting. Taking a structure in the vehicle from many pieces down to 1-2 pieces is truly incredible.
Model 3 has almost 70 parts in the rear construction.
These images show the contrast between the two vehicles and how much simpler the construction is.
The Model Y is the vehicle Tesla believes will sell millions globally, as I wrote about last week, so to produce the vehicle in large numbers they had to rethink the complete process of manufacturing at volume.

Matchbox cars will continue to be the cool toys that they have been for decades. It is now that the young children that loved those vehicles can now love the real vehicles made the same way and help influence the future of the car industry.
Apple car right under our nose!!!! Last week apple introduced to the world 2 new chips. The M1 Pro and M1 Max. Their introduction was met with great fanfare and excitement. Mostly for those waiting for the new MacBook pros and the upgrade to the Apple silicon.
But what if we saw the introduction of apple’s future move towards the apple car.

These chips highlighted the development of the M1 chip, released last year, with the M1 chips released last week. Apple has not been idle and have developed some powerful and significant improvements.
It got me to thinking have we been seeing the apple car development right in front of our eyes.
Tesla has demonstrated their inhouse development of chips gave them an edge to bring top to bottom and end to end integration with significant advancements to their vehicles and the FSD package.
Granted the development of Tesla chips is significantly different to apple but that only makes it more interesting to see the advancement.

Has apple been doing the same right under our nose? The M1 Chips have made some significant advancements in the configuration and construct of the chips. The performance metrics that apple outlined hint at a highly powerful, low power chip that can manage a large load for extended duration.
Full self-driving as shown by Tesla utilizes these very things to manage the system on the vehicle and the world around it.
So, what makes the Apple chips so impressive.

Even in apples own words it is “scary fast”.
Interesting choice of words.
But really this is a great example of apples thinking regarding future of computers.
It also gives a better understanding of what they are working on. Efficiencies in chips that are made in house and integrated top to bottom, end to end.
Yet why have we not seen the development of apple car and only hearing rumours.
Have they been constrained by the chips of the past?
Apple car right under our nose!!!! So, the introduction of the Pro chip makes sense to be in Laptops and work towards faster processing. As has been demonstrated by several reviews (Verge cast)
Of course, apple doesn’t stop with one chip they introduced the M1 Max.
This chip starts to demonstrate the innovation that apple has been working on. Rethinking how a chip could be developed to manage large quantities of data using least amount of power and producing performance off the scale.

I believe apple has had to wait for the development of their own silicon to get the power they need to move forward with their Apple car development. It is only now that we are seeing this come to fruition.

My thoughts
Firstly, let me just say I am not and engineer, digital architect, technical person who trained in any related field to create or construct chips, cars, or other tech devices.
These ideas are simply that just ideas and speculation.
Full self driving
So, let’s take the M1 Pro and put it in the context of a Full self-driving vehicle.
The architecture allows for high-speed bandwidth and transfer of data. One might say this is one feature that would be well suited to a full self-driving computer to manage thousands of pieces of data being input to manage the world around a vehicle.
Apple also outlined the power efficiencies that are made with the introduction of these new chips. This also lends itself to the use in electric power vehicles.
As Elon Musk has shown at his AI day and Battery Day, it is the incremental improvements that could be combined together that make the difference to the performance of a vehicle.
Both simple examples of Apple chips could be combined with other innovations apple has made over the years to truly build a Full self-driving computer.
Their incremental advances in chip technology are just one example of their technology prowess.
Why the MacBook if apple car is the target.
Apple car right under our nose!!!! Now I have made no secret that I am an apple fan boy just as much as a Tesla fan boy. I think competition is a good thing for the EV marketplace and with rumours that apple is working on a car floating around for years now it does make me wonder if there are some truths to those rumours, it has just been timing that has been the issue.
With these new chips they could ultimately work towards that Full Self driving future.

Tesla so far
It is well known that Tesla currently is leading the world of Self driving vehicles with their proprietary system “Full Self Driving”. They have also continued to develop hardware that supports the FSD future.

This development has been focused on the vehicles Full self-driving chips that support the functions of the FSD capabilities.
On top of which they are also rewriting the history of the Vision only system and the utilization of video rendering over still image rendering of object identification.
At Tesla’s AI day a huge focus of the day was the in-house hardware development of Chips for the DOJO system Tesla’s training program for their increased advancement of the FSD program.

The chip design when revealed, surprised many in the computing world with their sheer power and innovative thinking. Utilizing different way of thinking provided new and innovative approaches to chip design and construction.

It is no secret that Tesla is looking to make the world safer for drivers with Full Self driving and computer vision. The current view with Autopilot, which again uses a subset of skills to manage driving, has proven that using these tools provide a safer driving experience.
Even today there are reports of an ex-Tesla employee being recruited by Apple for the purpose of developing their autonomous driving capability.
Apple has not completely given up on the Apple car and with the introduction of these new chips is working towards and endgame that is yet to be realized.

Regardless of the innovation by both apple and tesla and many other companies in this space, ultimately the winner is the consumer and the environment.
So as a fan boy of both companies I look forward to the evolution that is yet to come.

The importance of going to space cannot be lost on the average person because it is the inspiration of visionaries that helps to inspire the soul to dream big and see many and new things come to the fore.

Over the last weeks it has become much clearer that we are seeing history for both the good reasons and the bad reasons.
Recently the World Health Organization highlighted the severity of our consternation about the environmental impacts our daily lives are causing to the environment.
Our thirst for the things we want and things we need are having grave and destructive implications to the world around us.
The introduction of Electric vehicles is one of many changes that we need to make to help the environment and the daily lives of our fellow humans.
So why are we taking so long to realize that we have the power at hand to make positive changes to the way we see the world.

Change is hard
It turns out that people don’t like change especially when they are comfortable in their own worlds. It is only when significant change is necessary that the realization that change is necessary to reduce remove and reverse the impacts of the previous actions.
This has been no more prevalent than with the Pandemic of 2020. The world had to change the way that they conducted themselves in short order. We have adjusted to different ways of life since then. Some good, others not so much. But the reality is we did change because we had too.

So, it is up to us to find a way to help ourselves, our fellow humans and find a future that makes a difference.
This is History in real life. Elon musk had a vision, just like a small child, wanting to see the future, yet as he got older that future never happened, so he made it happen.
He made a choice to go against the apathy and push the limits. He has inspired and driven more people towards that future, and they, continue to see the truth of our actions upon this world and are inspired to find new ways to help.
In Tesla’s recent “Impact Report” a clear set of metrics that Tesla and their customers has achieved are having real world impacts. Yet more needs to be done.
Tesla Vertical integration
Tesla has never hidden the fact that they want to transition the world to sustainable energy. They now have the ability for everyone to realize that dream with the integration of their products.
Electric vehicles, powered by solar panels that store energy for use later in battery packs. A view of the world that only 10 years ago seemed far out of reach for the average person.

Recycling materials
Reuse of materials seems to be less important in today’s age of single use throwaway society yet Tesla factors this into their vehicles and products. Specifically, they demonstrated that the battery metals can be recycled up to 92%. It is opportunities like this that will have real world impacts on the environment around us.

Emissions
One of the most important items within the Impact Report was the point about EV ownership and emissions. Tesla by its very nature is environmentally focused and has demonstrated this on several fronts.
Reduction of emissions can lead to improvements of health and reduce preventable deaths. It seems that EV’s are helping to assist this behavior by not having a tail pipe that produces emissions.

Accidents
When discussing preventable deaths Tesla also highlighted a significant drop in vehicle accidents when utilizing their vehicles across autopilot, active safety features, and again with no safety features. Their results are significantly less than the Average for the US.

These statistics demonstrate the benefits of driving a vehicle with 5-star safety rating and advanced safety systems designed to keep the occupants and the environment around the vehicle safe.
Inspiring childhood dreams
Space X and the invention of the Starship by Elon a visionary and the space X team have inspired a generation of up-and-coming kids that the dreams they have a child are now history in real life. The ability to inspire, feed the hopes and dreams and give hope when all seems hopeless, cannot be underestimated.
It is incredible to think that as a small child dreaming of spaceships and flying cars with robots that help me do my homework that the development of those things had to happen, and it is now that we are seeing that realization come to life.
I hope that this inspiration and passion for the future helps to continue to inspire and grow those young minds to dream big, to move forward with humanity and environmental concerns in mind and to see History in real life become reality of the future.

Australia is a proud and passionate country. Our history tells of a time of great challenge out of which came new ideas and innovations. We as a people are filled with determination to achieve great things. Our country prides itself on being a place of hope and prosperity with an intention to drive our imagination whilst creating the future. Australia is large continent, full of wonders great and small, old and new. We as its people embrace them all.
Over the years we have shown our patriotism in a number of ways. The Australian car industry has had a long and distinguished career and in part has been a driver to the prosperity of the country.
In the early days of the 20th century, we started to produce vehicles in Australia that we called our own. It was in the late 1940’s that we truly put our stamp on an Australian vehicle. With companies like Holden, Ford, Toyota and many more coming to market with Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles we thrived as a country and consumed these vehicles for passion, fun and the simple life.
These vehicles proved their worth by helping families travel cross country and discover the wonders of this great continent. However in our haste to have a vehicle we call our own, we did not realise that the dream of owning a brand new car was also the reason for our undoing. In our haste, to own a new car, we caused our own industry to be over run and ultimately decimated by foreign imports and greater variety.
Holden closed its doors in 2017, as one of the last manufacturers in australia and no one took their place.
Yet amongst the mayhem and loss, one Australian car company was forging a new path, ACE EV.

Global consequences
Our need for our own vehicle and reliance on fossil fuels has led the global population to pollute the very air we breathe and in turn cause catastrophic change to the environment. Health of the population has also been impacted by the environmental pollutants that the growing number of vehicles produced.
These environmental and health issues, that are a direct result of poor human decision making, have impacted Australia in recent years. Bushfires, droughts and increasing ocean temperatures are all indicators that something needs to change. Providing new and fresh ideas to fix the issues we have caused but to also set up the future generations for success should be our goal moving forward.

ACE EV – Australian EV Manufacturer. Over 5 years ACE EV have worked tirelessly to deliver on their promise of manufacturing an australian made electric vehicle. Whilst government incentives have been very rare ACE EV has been backed by private investors who can see the vision they are trying to deliver. These investors have been great supporters of Greg’s and ACE EV efforts to develop a unique vehicle that provides all aspects of the current vehicles on the road but without the pollutants.
In a recent interview with SME TV, Greg Mcgarvie explained that his vision to build an Australian electric vehicle has been like his child. A child that has grown up quickly considering their journey only started a mere 5 years before. It is wonderful to see Greg’s vision of manufacturing an Australian EV become reality.
ACE EV is Australia’s first home grown manufacturing electric vehicle company. Their initial startup was conceived in Brisbane Australia and in recent years they have collaborated with Aldom Motor Body Builders to begin production of their innovative vehicle design.
The ability for this company to grow an industry in a time that has seen much retraction is encouraging. Manufacturing in Adelaide helps to grow new jobs and develop a truly Australia wide collaboration between two companies.
ACE EV are not your traditional car manufacturer of electric vehicles. They have a unique production process. Their vehicles include the EV CARGO and ACE YEWT and due in 2022 is the EV URBAN.
The initial focus for ACE EV is in the commercial sector. The EV CARGO provides a small van that allows for approx. 500kg cargo carrying capacity. The size and carrying capacity suggest’s it’s a great vehicle for small business and companies who deliver goods within their local areas. Some recent examples include use by Australia Post.
The second vehicle in their line-up is the ACE YEWT. It is targeted at a number of key industries including Home Nurses, Government agencies, florists, news agencies. I would think that handymen and tradies would be interested as the vehicles promote the ability to charge tools from the vehicle. It is this innovation that truly helps to set ACE EV apart from the current competition here in Australia.
Due in 2022 is the EV Urban. This will be the car for the masses and hopefully help ACE EV grow their footprint home and abroad.
ACE EV specs
ACE EV have an innovative and unique process for manufacturing their vehicles. The body of the vehicle is made up of carbon fiber materials which when assembled create a strong and durable base. On top of this plastic body pieces are attached to the substructure of carbon fiber to form the shell of the vehicle. This combined with a 18kw motor with 45kw peak and 174 NM of torque provides a zippy vehicle for round town driving. The use of the Carbon Fiber reduces the weight to power ratio and thus allows the vehicles to perform with greater mobility and distance.

In recent update from Greg McGarvie, he provided an updated price breakdown for the up coming vehicles for Australia and USA. The prices that Greg outlined provide an insight into the competitive nature that the ACE EV vehicles will provide. With some of the most complelling value seen in australia for EV’s these vehicles will be compared to their foreign counterparts as value for money.

Battery packs
The battery packs are made up of 18650 cells and are contained below the floor of the cabin. A total of 23.2 kwh battery pack provides between 150 – 200 kms of range depending on load capacity. The heavier the vehicle the less range provided from the battery packs. This is the advantage of the Carbon Fiber helping to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle.
As the vehicles are built with carbon fiber combined with lightweight plastics they tip the scales at just under 1000kgs. In comparison to many internal combustion engines (ICE) vehicles of similar size the ACE EV is almost half their weight.
Australian innovation in the 21st century is alive and well and ACE EV is leading the way. Their preliminary line up of vehicles combined with their compelling prices and their innovative construction will truly give them an edge here in Australia.
The Australian Government’s support for electric vehicles has been quite negative in recent years and continues to be lack luster. What is encouraging for the future of electric vehicles in australia is a company like ACE EV working against the tide of adversity.
Manufacturing innovation
ACE Electric Vehicles are made of composite materials that are strong and durable. There manufacturing is done in an unusual way. The components for the vehicle are created in an overseas factory where the carbon fiber is shaped into individual pieces. These pieces are shipped in a “Smart Pack” and assembled in the Aldom Motor Body Builders factory. This video shows the process the construction takes.

We have been sitting pretty for a while now. Clean air, beautiful beaches, clear oceans and not much else. The world has had a taste of what it is like to feel the fresh breeze on their faces and the sweet smells of spring in the air. The environment has been amazing whilst we have reduced our driving of combustion engines during the COVID 19 stay at home orders across the globe.
However, in Australia, there is a storm brewing and it is going to set the tone for the next decade and beyond.
The Past
100 years ago we as a society of free thinking people made a decision between electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, this decision has had ramifications that most people in today’s world would deny.

Battle Lines have been drawn between Renewables vs Fossil fuels. Fossil fuels have propped up the economy for decades and the innovative new thinking of Non-polluting Renewables is starting to show real value.
Hornsdale
One of the best examples of the non-polluting renewables is the Hornsdale Battery(https://hornsdalepowerreserve.com.au ). The Hornsdale battery has proven that non-polluting renewables can be more valuable and responsive than traditional power plants.
Examples like this are all around us we just need to be able to see through the fog of miss information and see the detail of the issue and the outcomes of the new innovative thinkers to see the benefits that it brings.
Australian Government stance
Currently the liberal government have very clearly stated, before COVID 19 came along, that they are not as focused on the environmental impacts as they try getting the bottom line back in the black.
This was no more demonstrated by the removal of the environmental portfolio in the government ministry from the cabinet to a sub role.
This change put a nail in many believer’s ideas about there being some progressive thinking within the government. However, COVID-19 and the stay at home management of the spread has certainly turned Australia on its ear and put it in debt to the tune of over 130 billion dollars.
This budget deficit offers an opportunity for the government to show leadership. They have shown leadership when the management of the country was going through the shutdown but now it is time to show leadership in how we move into the future.
To help grow the economy again it is imperative that all options be considered. In doing this it is also important to look at the long term impacts both economically, politically and environmentally.
The government in Australia has not had a good track record with their support for new innovative ideas surrounding the environment.
As we have seen with regards to the COVID 19 virus the environment if taken for granted has a way of hitting back.
If we are to move into the next generations with the ability to hold our heads up high and be mindful of the impact we as a society have then we need to move towards non polluting renewables.
What others are doing
Across the globe there are a number of countries which have made large strides to introduce the following elements to assist the transition with great effect. These include projects that are based upon;
Project like these,post COVID 19, can be the catalyst to grow industries that help to get the budget back in black faster whilst taking on the responsibility to manage the current environmental impact of fossil fuels.
The economy right now needs help to get back the losses that we have had over the last couple of months. We need fresh ideas and ways forward. This can only be achieved if the government , the people ,the innovators and business combine their resources to move Australia forward.
It is important to take stock of what we have, look at how we have changed in the COVID 19 world and start to look towards helping the future generations to live a happy healthy life without pollution and pain.
The Battle Lines have been drawn between Renewable vs Fossil fuels, lets hope that our Leaders have the courage to take not only the first step, but many more after that and help Australia find its way into the future and to the self-reliant future of the non-polluting renewables age.

Yes, we are being forced to stay safe and stay in our homes but the one thing that only a few people are talking about is the effect that this global shut down is doing for Mother Earth.
Let’s imagine a future where electric vehicles have become the mainstream, where factories run on renewable energy either generated by the sun and the solar panels, whether by wind from the fresh sea breezes, or the oceans where wave power is crashing up against the shore.
Let’s imagine all this energy is being stored in large battery facilities, in Hydro electrical dams’ and many other new and innovative ways.

Let’s imagine that our daily commute to work is from our bedroom to our living room where we hold meetings and spend many hours working from a distance but are just as productive if not more so.
Let’s imagine playing sports through virtual reality with spectators and crowds cheering from the side lines, being proud of your favorite avatar as they kick a goal, shoot a basket or score a goal.

Let’s imagine that as you look out over the city you see crystal clear skies with the clouds all white and fluffy and the sky crystal blue, shining upon you with the warmth of the sun and a fresh sea breeze blowing across your face or you take a deep breath and can only smell the pine needles of the forest trees swaying in the breeze.
Let’s Imagine that you are sitting in your back yard and the trees around you are lush and green and full of birds and critters. A squirrel runs down the trunk and gathers the acorns up and runs away into the lush grass towards a new tree.
As you look up past the tree you see geese flying high in formation and all you hear are the flapping of the wings as they pass by.
We are, right now living that dream. We may have a virus out there, but the knock on effect of not using all the fossil fuel related machinery and Co2 producing machines is a beautiful world that allows us to see how the things could be if we embraced the renewables future that is there for the taking.
Since we as a global community have stopped, the earth has started to recover that which it was losing very quickly. Dolphins have come back to the canals of the recently clear waters of Venice. Birds have flocked back to beaches. Air is clearer than it has ever been.
Los Angeles city can be seen from the mountains and conversely the mountains can be seen from the city. With no smog the sky becomes clear. In China the levels of emissions dropped so dramatically it was noticed by satellite monitoring tools. The air cleared up and the city and all its beauty could be seen.

We have an opportunity before us. We need to learn from the current situation and see the future that is possible. Clean air and better breathable quality of air.
Cleaner water for us and the creatures of the world to share. Vehicles that do not pollute. Factories that do not pollute. A world that is clean, fresh and gives us hope.
Look outside and savor the beauty of the world around you in this unique time and know that this is possible if we are courageous enough to do what we believe is the best for the amazing planet we live in and not take it for granted.
Let’s grow, lets learn and let’s be part of the change that we and this world desperately needs, together we can achieve a future that looks better than where we are today.
This month I have written a number of blogs about the past of Tesla and the cars that have given Tesla the opportunities to grow and develop their cars and technologies to deliver cars that are not cars but pieces of phenomenal technology.
The future is now and with it comes new and exciting opportunities for people of the world to choose incredible technology, just so happens to be a car.
I believe what Tesla has done is change the definition of what a car can be. They have made an industry wake up and look around as their customers move to the world of the technologically savvy car.
The introduction of the Cybertruck and the Model Y will help to continue to grow the footprint of supreme electric cars. The introduction of the these vehicles has sparked the imagination of the next generation of drivers.
Within the next month the Model Y will be delivered to new owners. This has been achieved 6 months ahead of time and with such precision and intent. Tesla is playing a new game that no one has been able to compete with. Fundamentally this is due to the fact that they are a tech company not car company.

These above images are of the Model Y demonstrate that Tesla’s have similar features like cargo space as traditional cars contain however it also brings amazing new features that no other traditional car company could conceive.
The future of Tesla is well in hand and the innovation that they continue to bring will not be outdone for many years. The comparison to Apple when it first introduced the iPhone and the couple of years after that has strong correlation to where Tesla is right now.
The recent ascendance of the share price gives credence to the fact that the short sellers have been controlling the narrative for too long and now Tesla is finally getting its time in the sun.
One of the most compelling things about Tesla is it is not just a car company it is a tech company, and this is demonstrated when you consider the number of products they have and the potential they have to offer into the future.
