Rivian – Adventure is a lifestyle

Rivian – Adventure is a lifestyle

Rivian emerged in 2009 to fanfare regarding their introduction to the electric vehicle playground. Yet their mission was different from most other car manufactures.

Rivian’s Mission

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. We believe there is a more responsible way to explore the world and are determined to make the transition to sustainable transportation an exciting one. We designed our emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles to challenge what’s possible.

This mission talks about helping people enjoy the environment we live in and a wish to keep it pristine. Yet that was not always the vision for RJ Scaringe the CEO of Rivian.

Back before Rivian was founded RJ Scaringe was just a young man with a dream to work in the automotive industry and help to increase efficiencies within current vehicles. At that time all vehicles were internal combustion engines.

He spent his early years working on restoring Porsches in Florida where he grew his passion for vehicles of all types and fed the seed of his desire to be a figure in the automotive industry.

Yet over the years and whilst he was studying at MIT with a focus on the auto industry he was met with an internal conflict.

RJ was an outdoors person; he loved mountain bike riding and savoured the beauty and wonder of the natural environment.

Yet whilst he enjoyed exploring the wilderness on the back of a metal steed, he was frustrated by the fact that the vehicles he took to get to the wilderness were also polluting the air he so dearly loved.

During the following years, he came to realize that no matter what he did in any traditional car company he could not make a difference to change the status quo.

It was this realization that led him to start his own car company called Avera Motors. With funding from several investors, he set out with 20 others to create what would ultimately become Rivian.

Stealth Mode

Rivian – Adventure is a lifestyle. Rivian ran in stealth mode for over 10 years before revealing itself to the world. Stealth mode, for the uninitiated, is when a company runs under the radar without any badges or press releases and continues to grow and develop before opening itself up to the greater world. Rivian did just this and surprised the World auto market in 2009 when they revealed the R1-S and R1-T

R1T camping

Early in Rivian’s development, they spent the first 5 years working to grow their team, building the business and organization whilst working on a sports car design.

That’s right, Rivian had at that time focussed on a sports car it wasn’t until later that the adventure vehicle of the future really set the tone.

RJ Scaringe’s dream of developing a vehicle that helps to get people to experience the outdoors and create memories was not in the sports car realm. So, they Pivoted.

They pivoted and changed focus to the adventure lifestyle that is now a driving force behind the adventure vehicles R1S and the R1T.

Pivot

Rivian finally released their new Vehicle R1-T to the public with first deliveries. So how did they get here?

When RJ Scaringe decided to Pivot away from the sports car, he focussed on what he truly believed. His passion for the outdoors and his drive to preserve the beautiful wilderness, that he loved, helped to frame the question of where to pivot.

Making a vehicle that not only can get you to the place you want to be but to do so by inspiring adventure. Helping the individual to make new memories and the vehicle that helps you to stay active.

Just as Tesla has a mission to transition the world to sustainable energy, Rivian wants to help people experience the outdoors, be more active and adventurous. They also don’t want to impact the climate or the natural world around us whilst doing it. They just want to encourage the adventurous spirit.

The vehicles

Rivian – Adventure is a lifestyle. The introduction of the new Rivian R1T and R1S was not the first 4×4 electric Truck to be introduced to the marketplace but they are one of the most appealing choices.

R1T dirt road

These vehicles whilst feeling familiar have nothing but new respect and take on the industry. RJ Scaringe famously mentioned that to reinvent the vehicle for the future you need system-level thinking and a clean sheet of paper.

They decided to ask the fundamental questions of why it is important to have a vehicle for adventure. The answer they delivered is that of the R1S. This off-road adventure vehicle had some surprising features.

The introduction of the skateboard design battery pack with a rugged protection system and features like the “Tank Turn”, the gear tunnel, and adaptable list of camping accessories makes the Rivian R1S a more than a capable vehicle for the outdoors.

At first glance, the Rivian looks familiar like current trucks/SUV on the road which will make it extremely appealing to the average person who is looking to Buy.

Charging infrastructure.

Up until recently the assumption by most is that Rivian would utilize the Charge America chargers to power their dream of the future.

However, the chargers that are required for outdoor adventures are not located in the exact locations. So Rivian has developed their own. These chargers are to be in numerous locations across the United States as a starting point and are in wilderness areas.

The Rivian Adventure Network will be the connection you need when seeking adventure.

Rivian has also developed home chargers and portable charging cables as well.

My introduction to the Rivian Brand

Rivian – Adventure is a lifestyle. I had heard of Rivian as they came out of stealth mode. It wasn’t until the “Long Way Up” documentary that they really captured my and many others’ interest. The vehicles that were used through the show were the first ever built. They were rough but practical and capable. They proved that electric vehicles could be used when off-road and going through rough terrain.

Since this show was developed and aired Rivian has moved forward with leaps and bounds. Development of the vehicles along with the creation of the factory in Normal has given them the capability of creating their original dream after pivot of an adventure vehicle for the masses.

A dream was realized for RJ Scaringe and the team at Rivian.

Rivian is mostly focused on the American market currently, however they have deployed test vehicles to Australia and New Zealand currently. These vehicles are, by my best guess, to prove they can handle  Australian and New Zealand terrains and also have them reviewed and hopefully approved for sale in Australia in the years to come.

I for one will be watching how Rivian proceeds and grow over the coming years. Their passion and mission again inspire the imagination of where the vehicles can go, but more importantly how they can help to improve the environment and maintain an adventurous spirit.

Master Plan Realised – Tesla Model 3

Hedgehog 2
We did something

Secret

Master plan realised – Tesla Model 3, I am smiling like a Cheshire cat.

The last couple of weeks I have had to keep a secret. In doing so it made the reality so much better.

3- 4 weeks ago I was working from home and my wife walked in the house and said,

“ It cost me $93 to fill up the car today. The petrol price was $1.79. This is ridiculous I am seriously going to crunch the numbers to see if we can afford a Tesla.”

My wife

Well to say my jaw just about hit the ground was an understatement.

Jaw dropping

You see we have talked about it for many years but ultimately the price of electric vehicles seemed so expensive.

I have had a lot of the Tesla and EV community say, yes the upfront cost is more, but the running cost and the cars are something else.

I understood that, but it was hard to justify such a large amount for someone who is an average wage earner.

So, it was massive surprise that my wife was adamant that the price of fuel was not going down and she went about working it out.

Number crunching

After a lot of number crunching of the budget and looking at all the items you need for a new car.

It would cost no more than an extra 30 dollars more than what we were already paying for her Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle.

We were both surprised by the results.

It turns out that in the last 12 months there has been a shift in the interest in the electric vehicle industry. There has been more attention paid to electric vehicles as the global push towards renewables.

Trade-In

The key to the purchase was the trade-in of the existing vehicle.

ASX 2
Trade in vehicle

We tried to find a place that might purchase the vehicle out right, but most places offered way less than the expected amount we were both after.

Due to this we paused for a moment as we needed to get the right price for the trade in.

After a few trade-in prices that were not close enough, I went back to the Tesla website to droll over the Model 3.

I noticed that Tesla does trade-in’s.

So, I, entered all the details of the vehicle and went about my day.

TRADE IN LINK

Out of the blue a couple of days later I had a phone call from the Sales rep at Tesla. He mentioned that they had sent an email with the trade in price and that they would be able to cover the value I entered.

I was completely surprised and realised the Model 3 was back on the cards. Tesla had the best trade in price of any place we had visited before.

Test Drive

Master plan realised – Tesla Model 3. So, we booked another test drive to just confirm that this was the direction we wanted to go. Seriously who were we kidding we wanted the Model 3 and we just wanted to test drive it again.

Now I have test driven a Tesla Model 3 before and they continue to be an amazing car. Both my wife and I had no doubts that this was what we wanted to do.

We signed on the dotted line that day and the Hedgehog was ours.

Hedgehog
The hedgehog

Whilst we were doing the order in the store with a fantastic salesperson, Jerry, he asked the question if we were health employees. It turned out that we received some extra benefit for being health employees which meant no delivery fee and 3 years of maintenance support.

health professionals

This was a benefit we hadn’t expected but appreciated that Tesla was acknowledging the hard work the health professionals are doing right now. Well, done Elon and Tesla.

So, over the next 3 weeks we worked out financing, provided through tesla, trade-in, also through Tesla, and delivery.

Delivery Day

So, the day came, and I had taken the day off work as this was one thing I was not going to miss.

Both my wife and I went to the delivery center, a non-descript warehouse that had been set up with a waiting area and all the vehicles being delivered. The warehouse was full.

Tesla delivery centre

It seemed we were the first customers of the day. On our arrival, we were greeted by a lovely Tesla employee. They promptly had us sign the final documents.

Once this was complete, they pointed out the new vehicle and said we could take as much time as we needed to look over the vehicle, ask questions and get advice.

Model 3
The new car

We took photos and couldn’t wipe the smiles of our faces. We spent a good 20 minutes just looking over the car to make sure nothing obvious was wrong or missing.

The car was perfect.

No panel alignment issues, no blemishes on paint or interior.

The car was glistening and perfect.

The quality of these vehicles is just incredible.

One thing that you never get used to is the quietness of the vehicle.

It is sneaky quiet.

As we drove out of the delivery center my smile grew wider and wider.

This is the car I had been dreaming of owning for over 5 years. It was a pipe dream that now was a reality.

We slowly worked our way out of the delivery center and onto the freeway where I put my foot down and felt the sheer excitement of the vehicle as it hurtled down the road. This vehicle is something else.

We have driven the car over the last week and have been amazed at its drivability and features.

It is a generational step forward and has just reinforced the need for everyone to take this leap.

I am sure there are positives and negatives to this decision, and we will discover these as we move into the future.

But I have dreamed of this moment for over 5 years and now that it is here it is has exceeded my expectations.

Looking forward

Master plan realised – Tesla Model 3, I look forward to bringing you with me as we discover the ins and outs of this new reality I find myself experiencing.

My family and I have achieved a goal we set many years ago as the last step to completing my original master plan.

Time to reset the plan and start again and see what comes next.

Hope you will come along with me on this journey and we can discover things together.

History In Real Life !!!

“Space the final frontier”, it seems that every time I hear these words of late the first thing, I think of is Space X. History in real life !!!

The importance of going to space cannot be lost on the average person because it is the inspiration of visionaries that helps to inspire the soul to dream big and see many and new things come to the fore.

Space X

Right now, we are living history right before our eyes.

Space X is proving that if you strive for the stars then the stars won’t seem so far away, and the human spirit will soar.

Over the last weeks it has become much clearer that we are seeing history for both the good reasons and the bad reasons.

Recently the World Health Organization highlighted the severity of our consternation about the environmental impacts our daily lives are causing to the environment.

Our thirst for the things we want and things we need are having grave and destructive implications to the world around us.

The introduction of Electric vehicles is one of many changes that we need to make to help the environment and the daily lives of our fellow humans.

So why are we taking so long to realize that we have the power at hand to make positive changes to the way we see the world.

Advertisements

Change is hard

It turns out that people don’t like change especially when they are comfortable in their own worlds. It is only when significant change is necessary that the realization that change is necessary to reduce remove and reverse the impacts of the previous actions.

This has been no more prevalent than with the Pandemic of 2020. The world had to change the way that they conducted themselves in short order. We have adjusted to different ways of life since then. Some good, others not so much. But the reality is we did change because we had too.

Italy, Greece, Europe, and many other locations across the globe are currently experiencing wildfires, floods, famines and so much more. Environmental impacts are being felt. ( Courtesy of NBC.com)

So, it is up to us to find a way to help ourselves, our fellow humans and find a future that makes a difference.

This is History in real life. Elon musk had a vision, just like a small child, wanting to see the future, yet as he got older that future never happened, so he made it happen.

He made a choice to go against the apathy and push the limits. He has inspired and driven more people towards that future, and they, continue to see the truth of our actions upon this world and are inspired to find new ways to help.

In Tesla’s recent “Impact Report” a clear set of metrics that Tesla and their customers has achieved are having real world impacts. Yet more needs to be done.

Tesla Vertical integration

Tesla has never hidden the fact that they want to transition the world to sustainable energy. They now have the ability for everyone to realize that dream with the integration of their products.

Electric vehicles, powered by solar panels that store energy for use later in battery packs. A view of the world that only 10 years ago seemed far out of reach for the average person.

Recycling materials

Reuse of materials seems to be less important in today’s age of single use throwaway society yet Tesla factors this into their vehicles and products. Specifically, they demonstrated that the battery metals can be recycled up to 92%. It is opportunities like this that will have real world impacts on the environment around us.

Emissions

One of the most important items within the Impact Report was the point about EV ownership and emissions. Tesla by its very nature is environmentally focused and has demonstrated this on several fronts.

Reduction of emissions can lead to improvements of health and reduce preventable deaths. It seems that EV’s are helping to assist this behavior by not having a tail pipe that produces emissions.

Text Description automatically generated

Accidents

When discussing preventable deaths Tesla also highlighted a significant drop in vehicle accidents when utilizing their vehicles across autopilot, active safety features, and again with no safety features. Their results are significantly less than the Average for the US.

These statistics demonstrate the benefits of driving a vehicle with 5-star safety rating and advanced safety systems designed to keep the occupants and the environment around the vehicle safe.

Inspiring childhood dreams

Space X and the invention of the Starship by Elon a visionary and the space X team have inspired a generation of up-and-coming kids that the dreams they have a child are now history in real life. The ability to inspire, feed the hopes and dreams and give hope when all seems hopeless, cannot be underestimated.

It is incredible to think that as a small child dreaming of spaceships and flying cars with robots that help me do my homework that the development of those things had to happen, and it is now that we are seeing that realization come to life.

I hope that this inspiration and passion for the future helps to continue to inspire and grow those young minds to dream big, to move forward with humanity and environmental concerns in mind and to see History in real life become reality of the future.

Tesla Australian Price Drop

Tesla interior

Tesla drops the Australian price again. 6 months after the last price adjustment Tesla has delivered another drop in price.

Unexpected, or was it?

Since the beginning of the year, many from the Tesla Australian community have felt a price drop would occur in the first quarter.

The introduction of the new Model 3 deliveries coming from China helped to drive this belief.

I was lucky enough, back in January, to spot, in the Tesla store online, that the new Model 3 had the updated newly designed interior being manufactured in China.

So many have felt that a price adjustment was inevitable.

That price adjustment happened early Saturday morning 17th April 2021 Australian time.

Model 3’s price dropped between approximately $4000 to $7000 AUD depending on the Model 3 purchased and the date purchased.

Tesla working to the mission

This price reduction once again proves that Tesla is trying very hard to help as many people as possible transition to sustainable transportation.

The goal of owning an EV continues to be a struggle for most average people. Prices of electric vehicles is considerably higher than ICE vehicles. Currently it is possible to purchase two ICE vehicles for the price of a Tesla model 3.

It is this disparity with prices that is still proving a barrier to the mass uptake in Australia.

If the Australian government both federal and state were serious about the uptake of electric vehicles in Australia they would introduce incentives that would help to increase their uptake.

Climate Change

Climate change is the pandemic that most people ignore because they believe that it won’t happen to them. They cannot do anything to make a difference. That is where they are wrong and governments have a responsibility to help.

Tesla continues to strive to meet their mission of transitioning the world to sustainable energy, including transportation. This continues to motivate and drive Tesla to improve their products and their prices, to make them more attainable for the general public.

This is certainly the case in the USA with a considerable uptake of Tesla products in both energy and transport. It is this passion to make a positive impact upon the environment and help turn around the catastrophic impact we, as humans, have made to the environment.

Change is hard, resistance is futile, we are NOT the borg.

All change takes time and is resisted by those that have a vested interest in the old technologies. Motivation like this is generally driven by money.

However, with new ideas comes, new opportunities. Opportunities that are finally being understood by countries in the northern hemisphere.

Not only that, but our closest neighbour, NewZealand, has also started the journey to make electrification more prominent in the minds of the citizens and help to increase the uptake of EVs as a priority.

Australian political leaders who work in the Australian Federal Government are stuck in the past. The perception is that they are not looking to the future.

So to see companies like Tesla try to make a difference to the average person by adjusting prices in a downward direction helps to keep pressure on governments to make change. It also helps continue to get more and more people into the electric vehicles market.

Prices drop

Model 3 price adjusted

Once again it is brilliant to see a price reduction.

The below image is of Tesla ordering page for Model 3. this is to compare prices from January.

Currently the prices show as follows on Tesla.com. 4000 AUD price reduction is a nice price drop and hopefully will get more uptake of the vehicles.

The Long Range and Performance models also received price reduction.

The wheels continue to remain at the same price of 2200 AUD for the 19” Sports Wheels which are selectable for the Standard Range Plus and the Long Range Model 3.

Performance Model 3 retains the 20” Überturbine Wheels.

Tesla continues to improve on price, range and perception. They continue to push the industry kicking and screaming towards a better future. The only thing in Australia holding them back is the federal governments policies that are stuck in the past.

Side Lines 04 – Gigafactory 3

Many months ago there was speculation that the next Gigafactory would be in China. Many discredited this information as hearsay and rumours. Fast forward less than a year later and the Gigafactory is built and preparing for ramp up of production units rolling off the lines.

What an achievement. It is truly amazing that a building of this size and complexity could be built in that time frame. The people of china and Tesla should be commended for their work ethic and passion for an amazing company and vision.

As with all things Tesla i started to think about the possibilities. I wondered once again about the Australian EV market and the possible benefits that might be available to us with the production beginning in Gigafactory 3. If we in australia where to import Tesla Vehicles from China rather than USA we might have a greater chance of lower prices.

China is a big market for Tesla and I appreciate the possible benefits the company will get with the sales numbers. However we in Australia find the vehicles very enticing but the “average joe” has very little chance of being able to afford it.

Gigafactory 3 is an achievement that could benefit more than the Chinese mainland and could allow for greater proliferation of Tesla’s across the pacific. Increasing uptake and reducing possible cost to those customers.

Dave

Side lines 02 – price

I have written about price before and that’s because the price of a Tesla in Australia compared to other vehicles, is high.

I believe one of two things. If Tesla model 3’s were manufactured in China at GF3 and sent to Australia there might be the ability for a price reduction due to a number of factors including trade agreements, cost of construction is lower, etc.

The second is the idea that Australia could be home to a Gigafactory.

Uptake of the Tesla vehicles would increase with either of these. As price could be reduced which would allow for more people like my self who could not afford a $70000 dollar car may consider a $50000 car.

Just my thoughts. What do you think?

Dave.

Visionaries

This last week made me reflect upon many and varied different visionaries. Over history there have been some amazing people who have seen a future that does not exist. People who have looked at the parts of something and seen the connection that makes them the new future things , direction and movement.

It has been 8 years since one of the most profound visionaries passed away. He has become known as the creator of the modern mobile age. His impact helped the evolution of technology. His influence helped to grow and drive a whole new culture, workforce and future. The person of course is Steve jobs.

His impact on technology was so profound that the world changed in a matter of 10 years. His impact is not disputed but his rise was full of controversy and disarray. Those experiences gave him a view of the world that allowed the decisions he made possible.

The current world has again become the custodian of another visionary. Their passions and drive have again started to have far reaching impact on the next evolution of technology, of motion , of space travel and of course our future.

Where Steve jobs was a visionary and loved by many, the new visionary is loved by many but just as much hated for his ideas that continue to challenge the status quo.

The humble automobile is and has always been the staple of the modern family. It has always been a large purchase with good features and the biggest selling point of being able to get you from pint a to pint b in quick fashion. It has also become a symbol,an icon of the oil driven age we live in and many do not want that love to be challenged. But over the last 100 years no one thought about the impact it would have on our environment and health.

The new visionary has made a clear statement that the status quo is not acceptable. Tesla a 10 year old electric car company has given the world a new vision and new direction and at the helm is Elon Musk.

Elon is a visionary with the passion and drive to not just look at how we get around the earth but to also drive our imagination to explore the stars. His elation and childish grin when seeing his rockets take off or talking to a crowd about the latest cool thing is infectious.

He has taken a small car startup and made it into the world leader in electric car technology. He continues to drive and push the minds of those with a similar passion to do and be more then they could ever dream.

Visionaries are rare and we should help to celebrate their successes. We should learn from their lessons of never give up and be passionate about what you do.

I strive to be the best I can be and passionate about what I am passionate about. I hope that I to will inspire others to be more than they will ever dream they can be.

Just like Steve Jobs and Elon Musk.

Dave.

What a Week

Deliveries

Well here in Australia deliveries of the new Model 3 continued in earnest. With many of the online community posting some fantastic videos of their experiences and their opinion of the car, the software and the love they have for their model3. A big shout out needs to be made to the passionate staff at all Tesla stores Australia wide and globally for their commitment to deliver a great customer experience.

Environment

Climate change is on the lips of many people in the world this last week. This has been driven by the peaceful strikes by the children of the world. The scientific community finally has a unified voice in their displeasure with current standing of environmental status. Tesla for many years has professed their driven by improving uptake of environmentally responsible transport. All EV’s meet this criterion as well. I have hope that the next years will bring the changes that are required to start the healing of our environment and the electrification of vehicles is just one of those steps.

Software

This week has been one of the most anticipated software updates that has come in recent history of tesla. Version 10 has been coming now with new and fascinating changes that will only grow and enhance the love for Tesla vehicles.

Tesla Theatre
  • Netflix
  • YouTube
  • Hulu
  • Tesla Tutorials

The introduction of these is a welcome inclusion as it allows people to watch their favourite shows whilst Tesla recharging at superchargers.

Smart Summon
  • One of the most anticipated inclusions so far.

This has been one of the most talked about features across the Teslaverse. This allows users to call their car to them from across car parks etc.

Caraoke
  • This is just pure fun for anyone who loves karaoke and loves to sing with the lyrics.
Restaurants and Destinations
  • this is one feature I think I would love. I am always asking my wife what she wants for dinner now all I would have to do is hop in the car and push the” I’m feeling Hungry “button and let the car decide. This is also true for the “I’m Feeling Lucky” feature when I don’t have much to do for the day and I click that button. My day of fun driving begins.
Spotify
  • Improving music players in the car are a widely requested feature and now Spotify is available. This will give a lot more options to people. Hopefully apple music will not be far away.
Tesla Arcade
  • Games have been a feature for a while on Tesla’s but now they have even more with the introduction of the most famous game “CupHead”. This game has frustrated people online for a while now but it’s fun and excitement is unprecedented.

There have also been some other enhancements including further uplift of sentry mode. Inclusion of Joe Mode allowing reduction of noise in the car when kids are asleep.

This software update is large and full of features and fun. The future is bright for the software and enhancements from Tesla.

Government

Australian government has been a back-seat driver when it comes to the environment and this week they have not been stepping up to their responsibilities to the people of Australia. Environmental issues both abroad and in Australia need to be looked at in a very different way and that needs to occur now. For the electric vehicle community, they can make simple changes that would allow for environmental improvement and allowing people who are passionate about the electric car industry to gain ground in Australia which by all reports lags behind the rest of the world by several years.

In my opinion the future is still bright for EV’s within Australia and the new features and fun that Tesla keeps introducing is only making me have hope that we can get it right. The government will get on board and the world will work out the environmental issues.

So, my advice is, keep your chin up and go buy a tesla. That’s my plan in the future.

Dave

Test Drive

Check out my Video here “Test Drive”

Today was a day that I had long waited for.  For 3 years I have watched with hope that one day I might be able to drive a car I had become enamored with for the curves, colours and style.

The car I am talking about is none other than the Tesla model 3. Today was my Test drive. To say I was excited is an understatement. I have bored my family with my incessant talk about tesla for many years now. I created the EV-HQ.com website to feed my passion for EV’s and today I got to drive the most incredible Electric vehicle of all.

All day I had been talking about the day being special. My wife who loves Tesla’s as well, just not as passionate as me and my son who has only recently jumped on board my Tesla train, gave clear instructions that I was not to mention tesla to much in the lead up to the test drive. This seemed fair as I know I talk about tesla far too much every other day, so I kept my comments and points of discussion till last thing in the day.

About an hour before we were meant to go for the test drive, we arrived at the Brisbane Tesla store and had coffee within visual range of the store. Outside parked in the golden sunshine was the most glorious site, a white performance Model 3. The carbon fiber spoiler and the red calipers with the performance wheels really made it a site to behold.

But as with most of my stories I had to wait. I held out until 30 minutes before I had my test drive and decided to look at the cars in the show room. Before walking into the show room, I took a good look at the performance model 3. It was white on white and looked gorgeous. Simple yet elegant in it design. My anticipation started to build.

As I walked in the door of the show room, I took in another site that was just as if not more so breath taking. Of course, it was a model 3 but this time is was in the red. Now I am no paint expert but man the red is stunning. It had not finger prints and was polished to shine. It had a white interior and looked divine. My son and I hopped into the back and front seats and really looked around at the workmanship and interior styling and design.

The one thing that the model 3 has in spades is “less is more”. To say that there is not much of the interior is totally true as there are no buttons that are not functionally necessary like the door release button, there are no knobs, no dials or any other piece of plastic that isn’t designed to be there. This is the new and very appealing evolution/revolution that electric cars and especially tesla are bringing to the table.

As we waited for our turn to go for the test drive my wife, son and I all scrutinized the 3 cars in the showroom. The model 3 of course, the model X a beautiful grey with white interior and a blue Model S that as always is incredible to look at and sit in.

I spent most of my time in the red Model 3 performance reviewing the seating position and going through the User interface display to truly get a feel for what was in the systems that had been specifically designed for this car.

At exactly 3:30 it was my turn. We handed over our license and signed the insurance form and were introduced to our guide. His kind, friendly and positive attitude a was instantly apparent and he put us at ease. He asked if we had seen the Model 3 before I mentioned that I had seen the left-hand drive Model 3 in store when they were on display. I started talking about the features and he realized very quickly that I knew a thing or two about the model 3 and Tesla. He said I could possible tell him a thing about Tesla’s. We will see I thought.

As we walked around the front of the cars, I realized we were heading for the white Model 3, I had hoped it would be the performance but alas it was not to be. A little disappointed but not at all worried that the model 3 we were allocated to drive would not let us down. After sitting in the driver’s seat Alex, our tesla guide, explained a few elements about the car and then set up our driver profile. I realized that it is one thing to look through the menu of the car it is a whole other thing to use the menu and the functions of the car to drive the car.

Having never driven the model 3 before I had to acclimate myself to the indicator being on the left side of the steering wheel and the gear lever on the right. Glad when driving and thinking the right lever is indicator that the car does not shift into reverse. It just beeps at you and keeps driving.

Once we were set, we drove out the entrance to loop around the block and head away from the store to an area 10 minutes away where we can truly see the potential of this awe-inspiring car. The silence of movement as the car pulled away from the store was wonderful to experience. The calmness that provides makes me smile to my core. As we glided down the smooth concrete drive, I held my excitement in check. This was the car that I had waited a very long time to drive and now here I was driving the model 3 and pinching myself with excitement. In the back of the car was my wife and son and they too had a wide smile on their face while they looked up out of the glass roof to the blue sky above. Nothing beats experiencing new experiences with family and friends.

As we made our way around the block Alex and I spoke about the regen braking as it felt like it was quite heavy. It seemed unusual to drive with one pedal, but I am sure it would be something I could easily get used to. Alex lessened the strength of the regen and we continued on our drive. The feel of the car on a rough under construction 40 km/hr. road was soft and supple in its rock and roll. The springs are not too hard or to soft and they provide the smooth timeless motion. The fact that the battery is under your feet is also a wonderful feeling with a low center of gravity.

We finally made it to a location with less cars and long straights and the ability to truly understand the power of the motors that have been placed in this white knight. Alex instructed me to come to a stop and hold the brake pedal down until hold engaged. He then asked everyone to put their heads on the back of their chairs as a precaution.

Now, I have driven a model s and understand the power these cars can produce. So, I was not surprised that my son was not quite ready for the power this car could produce.  As I punched the acceleration pedal the car shot forward and the bodies in the car pushed into their seats. It was at this stage that the all too familiar smiles appeared on all our faces, even Alex who I am sure has done this many, many times.

But our smiles did not stop there, as we approached the corner Alex instructed us to turn the car around and do another acceleration test. So, I turned the car around and waited for the traffic to pass. Once driving Alex asked me to get up to 50 km/hr. Once I got to this speed, he said to punch it. I put my foot to the floor again and the car shot away faster than I expected. This surprise speed surprised me the most and gave me that roller coaster feels. This care is truly special. My wife and son had not expected it and they loved it with squeals and laughs and smiles all round. Alex enjoyed the pace as well.

As we slowed Alex shoed us a car park where my wife had a chance to drive. I changed seats with her and sat in the back of the car which was also an experience. My wife went through the same set up and instruction I received at the beginning and she was away. She found the silence unsettling but enjoyed the car as it moved away. She too had opportunity to feel the punch of the car and I really enjoyed the feeling from the back seats. I looked up to the blue sky through the large back window and enjoyed the fun with my son. Michelle drove back to the Tesla store and asked many questions and really enjoyed the drive. We parked at the super charger on our return and Alex as a last homage to the coolness of tesla showed us the dog mode. My son plugged in the tesla to charge. It was at this point that our test drive ended with thanks and handshakes to Alex for showing us the best car on the planet.

There is no doubt that one day I will own a tesla. And it is no doubt that this test drive just reinforced the idea that the future is electric, and it is here now.

Thanks to Tesla and to Alex for a great experience.

Thanks to my Wife and son for indulging me my passion and for being part of the experience.

Learning new things

Today blog is a little different than normal. Not a focus on electric vehicles but rather a focus on the future of ev-hq.com . I am at WordCamp the conference for those of us who use the word press functionality that helps to build our websites.

As a beginner in the world of webpage development and information sharing I have developed my webpage based off the information available to me and the easiest way possible. Word press website building allowed me to have something up and runnng within a month. I thought it was about time I learnt truly how to grow my brand and use the website more efficiently.

This conference has given me some great ideas to help make my webpage much more advanced than where it is today. Simple ideas that can make the webpage faster and more interesting to my visitors.

On top of this learning the conference is allowing me the opportunity to network and identify key people in the community to assist if trouble should rise or to collaborate and guide my learning and offer ideas and feedback where necessary.

I am a believer in taking what you have and building on it to deliver unique and simple solutions. Hard work can deliver great leaps just as much as knowledge can help to grow a simple idea.

I am a passionate fan and follower of electric vehicles and a fan boy of Tesla, but I am also a person who wants to be a more active member in the EV community and to do this it is important to learn and grow my knowledge which will assist this growth.

It is an exciting week ,month coming up for Australian fans as model 3 deliveries are not to far away. So stay excited, share your the love and hopefully deliveries are not far away. I will continue to post on @evhq2 on twitter with any updates as they come to hand but in the coming months I will also start to grow my presence on the webpage and have regular updates and post.

Thanks to word press for putting on the word camp and helping me grow my knowledge and contribute to the world of electric cars.
