TESLA Model Y – Revolution in Manufacturing

TESLA Model Y – Revolution in Manufacturing. Elon Musk has said for several years that the way to improve efficiencies is to build the machine that makes the machine. Elon has been espousing that one of the legacy things that Tesla will be remembered for is their manufacturing prowess.

The Model 3 initially was one of the hardest manufacturing challenges that Tesla had to contend with. This was due to several assumptions and processes that were redundant and or too complex for a machine.

So, in recent years Tesla and Elon have spent many hours, days, weeks, and months working to find better ways to manufacture. The outcomes of this work are on display at the Giga Texas Opening.

The introduction of the Model Y being built out of Giga Berlin and the most recently opened Giga Texas is the beginning of the new way to build Electric vehicles with influence from how Matchbox Cars are created.

Giga Texas Opening

Giga Texas is the newest Factory created by Tesla. This last week saw the opening of the new Giga Texas factory. Texas is a big state and they do everything big, the party that Tesla put on was no exception.

The scale of the attendees and the size of the building were open for all to see. With drones in the sky and cars on the ground and over 15000 people enjoying the facilities it was by all accounts one of the best parties of the year.

In attendance was the one and only Sandy Munro. Sandy is known around the globe as a clarion voice regarding the engineering of cars.

He has on several occasions deconstructed vehicles to see how they were built and designed. This has led to some interesting observations and feedback.

Sandy has deconstructed several Tesla’s over the years and Tesla has listened. So, to see him at the Cyber Rodeo (Giga Texas opening) was not a surprise.

Matchbox influence

Matchbox cars have been built for many years by injecting metal into a mold.

This design has for many years been the holy grail for car manufacturing but when scaled always was impossible.

Elon has been a big believer in taking an idea and going back to first principles. It was this thinking that helped tesla get to a point of trying to create the same process at scale for EV manufacturing.

TESLA Model Y – Revolution in Manufacturing, The opening of the Giga Texas really puts this on display. As Sandy Munro highlighted in his video, the original vehicles had many parts that made up the front and back ends of the vehicle, as shown it now is one piece.

The benefits include the ability for the piece to be constructed exactly the same every time. When many parts are part of the construction variation can occur this can cause challenges with construction consistency and quality.

The injection mold of the castings is a revolution in saving time and effort. Was it an easy problem to overcome? No, as Elon has said in the presentation at Giga Texas, we asked 6 companies 5 said “no” and the 6th said “maybe”.

Well, the proof is in the pudding, the production of the Model Y will be a revelation to the industry.

With the opening of The Giga Berlin and The Giga Texas both have several giga presses that can produce these vehicles. When they ramp up it will become one of the most popular Tesla’s around the world.

The future of manufacturing.

  • 3d print metal 1

Recently I came across a story about Metal 3D printing. This printing machine, as shown in the link produces complex and unusual shaped pieces. These pieces could be, in combination with the Giga Press and Castings combined to reduce the production time of vehicles into the future.

Giga factories will become the heartbeat of the Electric Vehicle Industry. Their sheer size and rethinking of how a factory is constructed only helps to invigorate the people around and an industry that needed a fresh start.

The Model Y will be the highest selling and most sort after electric vehicle in the coming years. Just as Sandy Munro said Tesla is revolutionizing the car industry and through the change in thinking and acting upon new ideas and innovation helps to make them the leader of the industry

Model Y coming to Australia!!! Where were you when they announced the prices for Model Y?

This week we have seen pandemonium online over the release of the prices for the Model Y!

John Law from Chasingcars.com.au revealed that the prices had been released to the Corporate and industry customers this week.

Prices Revealed

The prices and the variants being released included

Model Y Single Motor RWD – $67,990

Performance Model Y AWD – $98,172

Missing from the lineup is the Long Range AWD Model Y variant. This omission is not unexpected due to the fact that the long range variant was not released initially when Model 3 was announced.

These prices are exceptionally good when compared with the current Model 3 prices.

The base Model 3 and the base Model Y are approximately $4000 different based on current numbers.  However, we must take these numbers cautiously as we are yet to understand what the on-road cost will be and if the prices of the Model Y include the GST.

2 Years is a long time

Article courtesy of Electrek.co

March 13 2020 the first deliveries of the Model Y occurred in the USA. Soon it will hopefully be Australia’s Turn.

What exciting news though. Model Y coming to Australia!!! The possibility of a new electric Vehicle coming to the market after such a long wait is truly wonderful.

The Model Y was released in the USA two years ago.

Since its release the Model Y has sold in the USA, China and Europe. The vehicle capabilities have been praised including its spaciousness, versatility and functionality for the average family.

Over the last couple of years those that follow me on Twitter will know, and have probably rolled your eyes, at the number of times I have petitioned, asked, enquired, and suggested to Elon musk (CEO of Tesla) to open the configurator for Australia and our neighbors New Zealand.

Unfortunately, those requests have gone unanswered. With the revealing of the prices this may not be far away.

Australian Market

I have mentioned in my blog “Model Y – 2022 is your Year” , and I still believe this to be true that the Model Y is the perfect electric vehicle for the Australian marketplace.

The higher ride height, the hatch back, the adjustable seats in the back and the ability to have 7 seats are just a few of the features that will appeal to the families of Australia.

Model Y will be well suited to Australia.

If the Model 3 has proven anything, it has established that the Tesla electric vehicles are capable of dealing with the extremes of the Australian environment.

The introduction of the Model Y will only reinforce this belief as it brings with it features that will appeal to the general public even more so.

The current range of the Model Y is based upon current battery technology (i.e., LFP, Nickel/cobalt) technology and not on the new 4680 cell development that Tesla has built and just deployed to their Giga Texas factory. The expected hope is range will become much greater at a lesser cost overtime.

Australia and by extension New Zealand have been anticipating the arrival of the Tesla Model Y for the last two years, it is truly wonderful to see the signs that the arrival is not too far away.

Amazing vehicle and technology

I have owned a Tesla Model 3 for the past 6 months and I can say without any doubt that it is, as will the Tesla Model Y be, the best vehicle I have ever owned and driven.

The features of the vehicle are unexpected and brilliant, surprising, and fun and I have not taken the smile off my face since.

I know that the Model Y will do the same for those of you who are looking for your next vehicle. The Model Y RWD will suit all needs for any family around town, daily and even for trips away. It will provide a one of the safest vehicles on the road with some of the most advanced technology ever conceived in comparison to other similar vehicles on the road today.

Software

Furthermore, it doesn’t stop once you buy the vehicle. With Software upgrades and a very active community of boffins who love to share their passion for Tesla you will be accepted into a community that supports each other and looks towards supporting a brighter future for our children.

Model Y coming to Australia!!! An electric vehicle is more than just a car it is a lifestyle, a passion, and a choice for a better future.

Australia’s Electric Vehicle Market Heating Up

Map australia
Photo by Joey Csunyo on Unsplash

Australia’s electric vehicle market is heating up with the recent fuel price rise.

Fuel Prices

The war in Ukraine has had global impacts on oil production and supply have hit the Australian petrol prices hard.

From a price just over $1.60 Litre less than a month ago, to over $2.20 Litre now has hit the hip pocket of all Australians with Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles.

It is hard to fathom paying over $100 dollars a tank of fuel for your average car.

Tipping point

I have spoken of the tipping point in a few blogs in the past one like “EV Opportunities for Australia“. It has always been looking when that tipping point might be.

There is no doubt anymore that the tipping point has passed. Now with the added pressure of the increased fuel prices, the demand for electric vehicles has hit new heights.

EV ordering Today

To give you some idea here is the availability of vehicles in the Australian marketplace if you ordered today.

With the limited supply in Australia and ordering times taking many months even years is it any wonder that the prices of the used car market for electric vehicles have jumped significantly.

Hope

But don’t lose hope. Electric vehicles are proving they have a future far greater than the ICE cousins. They will only increase in demand until the market has enough supply for the demand.

Companies like Tesla are increasing their manufacturing volume to meet this demand. With Giga Factories in Berlin, Germany and Austin, Texas USA out of which will be produced, initially, the Model Y Tesla is doubling down on supply.

The Model Y is not yet available in the Australian market but once it is able to be ordered it will undoubtedly become the most sort after vehicle.

Next time

One of the greatest challenges for purchasing an electric vehicle is the price. Check out my next blog where I talk price and how the government is attempting to help.

Wakeup Call – Amazon Oil Spill

Wakeup Call – Amazon Oil Spill. Whilst looking through Twitter this week and reading all the great Electric Vehicle (EV) articles about the Cybertruck, Tritium’s trading as a public company on the stock market, and SpaceX launching rockets, I came across an article that made me stop and think.

Amazon Oil Spill

Footage of an oil spill in the middle of the Amazon forest.

Amazon Oil spill

Now I know most people think that cutting down a few trees and passing oil through pipelines is all about helping the world advance. However, this footage just exemplifies the lack of understanding and appreciation we have for the environment.

A river of oil flowing into the waterways of the Amazon forest, the “lungs of the earth”, has given insights into what scientist and more recently Elon Musk has been saying.

The world is in crisis.

The World is in Crisis

Wakeup Call – Amazon Oil Spill. Whether it be climate, political, economic, or even common decency for each other, we have taken a beautiful planet, the only one we have, and turned it into a dumping ground. We rape and pillage it for our own self-worth, forgetting that somewhere down the track we will pay a price.

I know I normally write about Tesla and Electric vehicles in my weekly blog on EV-HQ.com, but this is to important not to comment.

My View

I am not an environmentalist; I am not a scientist and I have no qualifications in relation to climate.

What I do have is a commonsense state of mind and a hopeful outlook on the world.

This footage has shown that we are neglecting the very thing that we hold most dear.

This planet was not put here for us to damage and destroy but to sustain our very existence.

Without it, we are no more than atoms floating in an empty void.

I don’t want to be a hypocrite by saying we have to give up on all things oil-based, but surely, we can do better. We can treat each other better and we can make better choices.

Currently, in Australia, the federal political landscape is arguing over the government’s choices around climate change and environmental responsibilities. In the electric vehicle community, there is frustration that the federal government is not doing more to transition to sustainable energy. Decisions should be made based upon the urgency and needs of the citizens.

Wake Up call

This footage should be a wake-up call that the world has a responsibility to manage it better. To see the choices of those of the past and realize that everything we thought to be correct may need questioning and reevaluating.

Change is hard!

Those who make the brave decisions now, will be better remembered by history in kind.

Those that choose the keep their heads in the sand and do nothing will be tarnished with inaction.

Better choices

I have written before about making better choices for our children and grandchildren.

I have showcased those in previous blogs those that have worked to provide better choices. Here in Australia Greg McGarvie and ACE-EV have done just that with the introduction of their Electic Vehicle line up.

Elon Musk has been a giant advocate for the transition to sustainable energy. His companies like Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company and so many more are all about improving the environment or helping to assist humanity to be better.

Elon musk Companies

Many would criticize this stand but in combination, all his companies can achieve so much more than by themselves. Something the world may need to consider for itself.

United we stand a better chance of overcoming adversity and challenge than individually.

If nothing else the footage from the amazon oil spill should demonstrate we need to do things differently. We need to step up, acknowledged our mistakes of the past, and work to rectify them, whilst considering each other.

The world is being run by greed, it’s time to run it with compassion, consideration, and understanding for each other and the world around us.

Matchbox Car of the Future – Tesla, Matchbox cars have always been so much fun to play with as a child. They were always a great way to own a car without having to pay the price tag of some of the most incredible vehicles in the World.

Their simple designs and construction always made kids eyes light up with excitement and fun. Companies like Matchbox had thousands of cars both real and fantastic to choose from and they came in all shapes colours and types.

The construction of these vehicles would be as complicated as the real thing, but under the veneer, it was simply a metal cast with some plastic interior and wheels.

So why has it taken over 100 hundred years for a car company to try to do the same thing?

Tesla rethinks manufacturing

Matchbox Car of the Future – Tesla. Tesla has spent billions of dollars making some of the most incredible vehicles. They have now started to bring the same principles that matchbox employed into real-world vehicles. This simple approach has found several benefits.

Elon mentioned the process to create vehicles like matchbox cars several years ago. The Model Y seems to be the testbed for these advancements to make their way into real-world vehicles.

Giga Press

The Giga press appears to be the tool that will make this happen. The new factories of Giga berlin and Giga Texas and eventually Giga Shanghai will employ the use of the Giga press to produce castings of vehicle parts.

Casting rear

To achieve such an amazing manufacturing marvel Tesla worked to develop their own formula of aluminium to deliver the casting. Taking a structure in the vehicle from many pieces down to 1-2 pieces is truly incredible.

Model 3 has almost 70 parts in the rear construction.

These images show the contrast between the two vehicles and how much simpler the construction is.

The Model Y is the vehicle Tesla believes will sell millions globally, as I wrote about last week, so to produce the vehicle in large numbers they had to rethink the complete process of manufacturing at volume.

Linked In post

The recent post by Tom T. on Linked In shows the success of the Giga press and its possibilities moving into the future.

Matchbox cars will continue to be the cool toys that they have been for decades. It is now that the young children that loved those vehicles can now love the real vehicles made the same way and help influence the future of the car industry.

Model Y – 2022 is your year

Model Y production

Model Y – 2022 is your year.

2022 is the year that the Model Y will become the car to own. Its anticipation for international deliveries has been growing as 2021 ended. There have been several items that point to the Model Y being the car that outsells them all.

USA

The Model Y has been for sale and delivered in the United States for over a year. By all reports, the vehicle has been nothing but a marvellous vehicle to drive. One of the greatest selling features is its ability to be an amazing family vehicle. The fact that it falls into the class of an SUV makes it unique.

With the imminent conclusion of the Berlin and Austin factories, the ramp of sales for Model Y will only increase in 2022.

Model Y will be the first vehicle to be produced out of these new factories.

Commission of these factories is due to occur in the coming weeks/ days which will allow the Model Y ramp to happen very quickly.

Model Y – Evolution

Structural battery pack

Tesla has made no secret of the fact that the Model Y will be the first vehicle to use the new 4680 Battery Cell.

In 2019 Tesla was granted a patent for the new battery structural pack.

Structural Battery Pack

This structural battery pack, inclusive of the 4680 cells, is a revolution. The first real innovation made on battery technology for many years.

New technology, with the introduction of the 4680 cells, helps to show that using first principles to help stagnant technologies move forward is still possible.

Tesla outlined at their battery day presentation several innovations inclusive of the new 4680 cells. These innovations when combined should improve the range, power and efficiency of the new Model Y. There are huge expectations for the use of these new battery cells.

Recently they updated the Model Y owners manual which referenced the Structural battery pack.

To rethink the battery, you also have to rethink the infrastructure that makes it function.

Connectors and power management technology

Demand

The Model Y’s importance to Tesla has never really been cemented till now.

The new factories of Giga Austin and Berlin will help this along when they start production of the Model Y

The introduction of these new vehicles to the Market will increase both supply and demand.

Currently, the Model Y is only for sale in the USA, China, and Europe inclusive of the UK. The introduction of the new factories will hopefully allow for greater sales across the globe.

Demand for Tesla vehicles is at an all-time high. This has been seen with timelines for deliveries growing significantly, not just with the Model Y, but with the whole Tesla Fleet.

Initially, the Model Y will be delivered to the already existing customers to hopefully improve the delivery timelines once the new factories get up to production speed.

Once they have achieved this there are a couple of questions that need to be asked.

  • How long will the timeline be to catch up to demand that already exists?
  • What territories are next?
  • When is Australia ordering going to open?
  • Most importantly, where is the next Giga/Tera Factory going to be located?

These questions are important as they help to give customers a better idea about what to expect. As demand grows people will want more information to reference and rely upon. Not everyone wants to wait months for a vehicle.

I have written about the average person wanting to be able to make a difference. People will struggle to choose the change if they must wait for an extended time. So, the answer to these questions is paramount.

Battery day and the future

As was outlined by Tesla over a year ago on their battery day, the introduction of the 4680 cells will be a game-changer for the production of the Tesla Vehicles starting with the Model Y.

The 4680 cells and the structural battery pack are to be introduced to the Model Y. This would explain the initial production out of Austin and Berlin of the Model Y as a priority.

As seen in the images below the comparison of the battery packs between 2170 battery cells and battery pack and the 4680 cells and structural battery pack are significantly different but are contained in the same space-occupying area.

We are yet to see what the introduction of the 4680 cells will do for this vehicle however it cannot be dismissed that the changes that are being made are looking towards a future of greater distance, more performance, better efficiencies, and reduction in the cost of vehicles.

Past verse Future

Panasonic Partnership

Tesla has made no secret of the fact that they will require large quantities of battery cells in the future. The partnerships they have been building for many years like the one with Panasonic will only help to strengthen the production and deliveries of these cells.

It will make sure that the production of both cells and Tesla vehicles will continue to progress even during the difficult times we see ourselves in currently.

Tesla has also shown, that with their own production of their 4680 cells they can be part of the Giga factories. Inclusion of the production of cells in the car production facilities would be a game changer.

Austin and Berlin are just the start of this realization and the fact that the Model Y is being produced as the first vehicle is no accident. Elon Musk has said many times that the Model Y is the car that will outsell all other Tesla’s. The fact that these vehicles are the first ones coming out of Berlin and Austin just reinforces this fact.

Model 3

An article recently published by the Tesmanian website highlighted that in Australia the Model 3 has become one of the best-selling vehicles across the board. This is incredible considering the Australian political landscape until recently has not been very supportive.

Australia has always been a progressive country, just look at the uptake of mobile devices. I believe once the market shifts to support Electric vehicles in a much more progressive way the people of Australia will make that transition very rapidly.

This is all good for the Model Y and why many of us from the Tesla community keep asking when we can order the Model Y in Australia and in New Zealand.

Hyundai

It is inevitable that car companies who are starting to double down on EV’s will shut down and transition their workforce towards the EV marketplace. Hyundai has done just this, and I don’t believe this will be the last time we hear of other companies doing the same.

The only concern would be if they laid off a lot of people. Transitioning people to work in a new field can be challenging but also exciting and can bring out some fresh and interesting ideas.

Tesla Mission

Tesla has always been driven by there mission to transition the world to sustainable energy. Elon himself has been alarmed at the changes that need to occur and the fact that the world is dragging its feet. It stands Tesla out amongst the other companies who say they are the competition. Tesla is driven by a greater vision than just selling cars, solar or batteries. They are driven to make the world better. Plain and simple.

The recent video they published as shared by the Tesla owners club outlines some of the achievements the company has achieved. Not only do they have a mission, but they continue to strive to meet this mission in everything they do.

Australia not far away

In the middle of last year, Hong Kong was given the opportunity to order and receive the Model Y. At the time we speculated what the price and features would be that Australia could expect. We had also hoped that the ordering for Australia to start soon.

But alas nothing happened. However, 2022 is the year of the Model Y. There is no doubt that the introduction of the new Giga factories will take the pressure off the current factories producing the Model y and could open the doors for orders in Australia and New Zealand to begin.

Regardless of what happens the Model y based upon the new structural battery pack, the 4680 battery cells, the multiple locations of manufacturing and the innovation that is yet to happen to improve these vehicles will make the Model Y not only the car for 2022 but also the car most wanted, most bought and most desired across the globe.

Not a bad place to be for Tesla at all.

Electric Vehicle (EV) for everyone.

Mahatma Gandhi once said,” Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”

Last year saw a change in the collective psyche of the world’s population to the possibilities of the electric vehicle.

This change in thinking was bought about by a government policy shift, a better understanding of the capabilities of electric vehicles, more electric vehicles on the road, greater coverage of electric vehicles by media outlets and meteoric rise of share prices in electric vehicles like Tesla.

Most people

But for the average person, this change has helped to frame the question “what can I do?”

This is the only question most people ask. They ask this when they realize that either they don’t know what they can do, or they realize they don’t have

  • enough money
  • time
  • or motivation to make the change.

Most average people live paycheque to paycheque, sometimes working more than one job to make ends meet.

So it seems almost insurmountable how they could make a decision to buy a car that cost approximately $60000 AUD.

Our EV story

My wife and I were in this very position. We earn a good wage, have a mortgage and school fees and so many other debts and expenses. So how did we end up buying an EV?

We have crunched the numbers for many years about owning a Tesla and I have tweeted Elon over the years asking about the prices and if they would drop.

He agreed prices were high, however since this tweet the prices have come down significantly. We own one car and had a loan on a second fairly new Mitsubishi ASX.

But the ultimate trigger for my wife and I finally decided to take the Tesla purchase plunge was the increase in petrol prices to almost $2 a litre. With my wife’s old vehicle it worked out to be almost $100 dollars a week to fill up her vehicle. That is $400 dollars a month.

Be the change that you wish to see in the world

Mahatma Ghandi

Surprised

My wife came home after filling up and advised that she was going to crunch the numbers and find out if the electric vehicle was possible. It turned out that it was and the difference between what we were paying now for the loan on the car, petrol, maintenance, insurance roadside assistance and tyres, more than covered the cost. Less than a month later we had a brand new Model 3.

Since this time we have found out that owning an electric vehicle is the best decision, we have made for many years. Do we have a loan for a vehicle that we have to pay off, yes, but the money we save on petrol more than makes up for the extra cost of the vehicle.

The reason I am telling you this story is to highlight that we are the average family that I keep talking about, we are not rich and we don’t have lots of money. We just understand that to make the change we have to be the change we wish to see in the world.

We have been advocates of doing something small to help make a change on a bigger level.

” The butterfly effect”, is up to all of us to make small changes that make the world that little bit better for our children and generations to come.

The why

change
Photo by Ross Findon on Unsplash

You see I am a medical professional and have seen the best of humanity and also the moments of sadness that comes with death, illness and pain.

If there is something that I can do to help alleviate the pain of others by making better choices then i will try. To own an electric vehicle is one of those choices that we have made.

Owning a Tesla is not for everyone but owning an electric vehicle is possible for all.

Over the coming years owning an EV should get easier as more companies release vehicles and the market becomes more competitive. It, will only get easier as the next couple of years move forward.

Second hand market

In recent history, a lot of owners of the original Nissan leaf have taken the plunge and upgraded to the new Nissan Leaf. This improved the EV marketplace in the second-hand car market. They were snapped up very quickly and are still highly sort after.

The model y when released to the Australian market will hopefully do the same. Existing Model 3 owners may consider taking the step towards the Model Y and thus allow their Model 3 to be taken into the used EV market place which should allow others to buy at a lesser price than brand new vehicles and experience the benefits of electric vehicles.

2022 is the year if the Model Y

(Check out my next blog where I talk about the Model Y and how 2022 will be its year. )

The average person is able to own an electric vehicle as long as it is right for you and your circumstances. Our story is just an example of the possibilities.

Consider your current costs and look at the costs you need for the EV and decide if you are comfortable with the difference if any.

2022 will be an exciting year for EV’s and it would be great to have more people driving them to help the environment and themselves.

2021 Draws to a close!

Sunlight rock
Photo by Omer Salom on Unsplash

As 2021 draws to a close it is time to reflect and look ahead to the next year.

Ups and Downs

2021 Draws to a close! This year has been full of changes, ups and downs, turning points, and realizations.

At the beginning of 2021, the world was hopeful that this year would be seen as the turning point for electric vehicles. To say I and many others were correct with this assessment is more than an understatement. I have written about the tipping point ( Link to Tipping point)before, yet this year was the Turning point.

After the American election and the introduction of the new president the changes to focus on the environment and transition to electric vehicles took on a life of it’s own. Many other countries aligned with this vision, and they voiced their policies and ambitions to move towards the electric vehicle future.

Australia

Australia on the other hand was dragging its feet. States had been for several years working towards an electric vehicle future with small incentives and assistance to prospective buyers yet nothing from the federal government. That changed this year with the more aggressive change to policies from the states.

Federally the government focused on several initiatives but instead of helping the average person to get into the vehicles and reduce the cost, they went for infrastructure inclusive of charging stations. This is good and will take several years to implement but the states had already established this anyway. Secondarily they relied on a hydrogen focus.

Regardless it is a direction, and better than where we were at the beginning of the years. Slowly yet surely.

Australia’s electric vehicle uptake was approximately .78% of the vehicles sold at the end of 2020.

This year has seen a massive jump in uptake to increase electric vehicle purchases to above 1%. Still less than the rest of the world but a significant shift in the Australian psyche. All-electric vehicle sales these years equaled and surpassed the total of electric vehicles sold in the last many years.

On a personal note, I too was a customer of Tesla and finally bought a Tesla Model 3. This has been a highlight and the Model 3 continues to impress.

With Australia making strides forward this year with limited policies, then consider the countries with great policies and support for uptake. The numbers of electric vehicle uptake have exploded across the globe. This demand has added stress and strain to the supply of electric vehicles. No one should complain as this is the type of shift that is required to help the future of the planet.

COVID

2021 Draws to a close! Covid has been a challenge that has impacted the industry also. Vaccinations have been in high demand. This has helped the ongoing delivery of new electric vehicles out of EV factories

New vehicles were introduced to the world by some of the most popular manufacturers.

Ford introduced the F150 Lightning electric truck. Toyota, Volvo, Mercedes, GM and so many more have put on display their road map for the next evolution of their vehicle line-up and their transition to Electric vehicles.

New players have been in the market as well, Rivian, BYD, Polestar, Kia, Hyundai have all introduced vehicles some already for sale and delivery, and others in the last stages of the same.

The most notable of these is the introduction of the Rivian R1T. This truck with some new and functional features has had nothing but wonderful reviews by many influencers and critics alike. Their attention to detail and ability to give a wonderful customer experience whilst promoting adventure set them apart from any other manufacturer in the field. They are the first but not the last to produce an electric vehicle and deliver it to customers.

2021, will be the year of change and offer a realization that the industry is not fully committed to the electric vehicle marketplace and looking towards the future.

This commitment will help to accelerate the transition to electrification of vehicles and by extension, help to improve the environment.

Vision

A vision that Tesla had more than 10 years ago with their mission is not being taken up by so many more that the future of the planet and of the environment can only be better for our children and grandchildren.

2022

Lastly, I have not blogged as much as I wanted this year due to my day job, for that, I apologize. However, in 2022 I have committed to delivering my blog on a weekly basis come what may. So, thanks for staying with me and I hope I can keep bringing my view on EV’s to you as next year’s moves forward.

The future of EV’s is very bright and the next 10 years will show us just how much we can impact the world around us with good choices.

Have a merry Christmas and a Happy New year.

Right under our nose

Apple car right under our nose!!!! Last week apple introduced to the world 2 new chips. The M1 Pro and M1 Max. Their introduction was met with great fanfare and excitement. Mostly for those waiting for the new MacBook pros and the upgrade to the Apple silicon.

But what if we saw the introduction of apple’s future move towards the apple car.

These chips highlighted the development of the M1 chip, released last year, with the M1 chips released last week. Apple has not been idle and have developed some powerful and significant improvements.

It got me to thinking have we been seeing the apple car development right in front of our eyes.

Tesla Development

Tesla has demonstrated their inhouse development of chips gave them an edge to bring top to bottom and end to end integration with significant advancements to their vehicles and the FSD package.

Granted the development of Tesla chips is significantly different to apple but that only makes it more interesting to see the advancement.

Tesla spent a number of years working to develop the chips as shown below.

Has apple been doing the same right under our nose? The M1 Chips have made some significant advancements in the configuration and construct of the chips. The performance metrics that apple outlined hint at a highly powerful, low power chip that can manage a large load for extended duration.

Full self-driving as shown by Tesla utilizes these very things to manage the system on the vehicle and the world around it.

So, what makes the Apple chips so impressive.

Even in apples own words it is “scary fast”.

Interesting choice of words.

But really this is a great example of apples thinking regarding future of computers.

It also gives a better understanding of what they are working on.  Efficiencies in chips that are made in house and integrated top to bottom, end to end.

Yet why have we not seen the development of apple car and only hearing rumours.

Have they been constrained by the chips of the past?

Apple car right under our nose!!!! So, the introduction of the Pro chip makes sense to be in Laptops and work towards faster processing. As has been demonstrated by several reviews (Verge cast)

Of course, apple doesn’t stop with one chip they introduced the M1 Max.

This chip starts to demonstrate the innovation that apple has been working on. Rethinking how a chip could be developed to manage large quantities of data using least amount of power and producing performance off the scale.

In their own words it is faster than the Pro.

I believe apple has had to wait for the development of their own silicon to get the power they need to move forward with their Apple car development. It is only now that we are seeing this come to fruition.

My thoughts

Firstly, let me just say I am not and engineer, digital architect, technical person who trained in any related field to create or construct chips, cars, or other tech devices.

These ideas are simply that just ideas and speculation.

Full self driving

So, let’s take the M1 Pro and put it in the context of a Full self-driving vehicle.

The architecture allows for high-speed bandwidth and transfer of data. One might say this is one feature that would be well suited to a full self-driving computer to manage thousands of pieces of data being input to manage the world around a vehicle.

Apple also outlined the power efficiencies that are made with the introduction of these new chips. This also lends itself to the use in electric power vehicles.

As Elon Musk has shown at his AI day and Battery Day, it is the incremental improvements that could be combined together that make the difference to the performance of a vehicle.

Both simple examples of Apple chips could be combined with other innovations apple has made over the years to truly build a Full self-driving computer.

Their incremental advances in chip technology are just one example of their technology prowess.

Why the MacBook if apple car is the target.

Apple car right under our nose!!!! Now I have made no secret that I am an apple fan boy just as much as a Tesla fan boy. I think competition is a good thing for the EV marketplace and with rumours that apple is working on a car floating around for years now it does make me wonder if there are some truths to those rumours, it has just been timing that has been the issue.

With these new chips they could ultimately work towards that Full Self driving future.

Testing the chips in MacBook’s allows for large volume data collection of their performance.

Tesla so far

It is well known that Tesla currently is leading the world of Self driving vehicles with their proprietary system “Full Self Driving”. They have also continued to develop hardware that supports the FSD future.

This development has been focused on the vehicles Full self-driving chips that support the functions of the FSD capabilities.

On top of which they are also rewriting the history of the Vision only system and the utilization of video rendering over still image rendering of object identification.

At Tesla’s AI day a huge focus of the day was the in-house hardware development of Chips for the DOJO system Tesla’s training program for their increased advancement of the FSD program.

The chip design when revealed, surprised many in the computing world with their sheer power and innovative thinking. Utilizing different way of thinking provided new and innovative approaches to chip design and construction.

It is no secret that Tesla is looking to make the world safer for drivers with Full Self driving and computer vision. The current view with Autopilot, which again uses a subset of skills to manage driving, has proven that using these tools provide a safer driving experience.

Even today there are reports of an ex-Tesla employee being recruited by Apple for the purpose of developing their autonomous driving capability.

Apple has not completely given up on the Apple car and with the introduction of these new chips is working towards and endgame that is yet to be realized.

All are welcome

Regardless of the innovation by both apple and tesla and many other companies in this space, ultimately the winner is the consumer and the environment.

So as a fan boy of both companies I look forward to the evolution that is yet to come.
